NTI Board Approves Key Investments in Language, Health,
and Community Wellness

October 19, 2026, Kugluktuk, Nunavut - Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. (NTI) Board of Directors have approved a series of spending plans for initiatives that build capacity in Inuit language and education, strengthen health and wellness, and advance tuberculosis (TB) elimination across Nunavut.

At its Board meeting this week, NTI approved the following:

  • Inuktut Education and Building Inuit Capacity: $4.3 million to establish and maintain the Development Team that will support Inuktut Education in Nunavut and build the Inuit capacity required to establish Inuktut school(s). The funding is from NTI’s accumulated distributions under the Nunavut Inuit Resource Revenue Trust for all preparatory implementation work of one or more Inuktut Academic Schools.
  • Uqausirngaq Framework Implementation: $5.7 million between 2026-2028 from NTI’s remaining Uqausirngaq Funds that will go toward Inuktut education, Inuktut language training, media and arts, language documentation, data and community programs. The source of this funding is Heritage Canada’s Indigenous Languages Component
  • Registration as Indigenous Governing Body under section 12 of the Act respecting First Nations, Inuit and Métis children, youth and families: The Board of Directors decided that NTI will become a designated Indigenous Governing Body. This is the first step for NTI to provide important oversight on Inuit child welfare matters. While this is an important milestone in NTI’s work for self determination in child welfare, the Government of Nunavut, Department of Family Services, and all other outside territorial and provincial child welfare agencies remain fully responsible for all child welfare legislative duties.
  • Tuberculosis Elimination Spending Plan: $8.7 million in TB elimination funding. The approved plan reflects NTI's long-standing commitment to protecting Nunavut Inuit and communities from tuberculosis. The plan focuses on strengthening the health system and supporting families and communities, including a reserve fund for communities with elevated tuberculosis rates, enhanced nutrition and food security programs, and efforts to eliminate TB stigma.

These approvals reflect NTI’s continued commitment to advancing Inuit priorities, supporting Inuit-led solutions, and improving socio-economic outcomes for Inuit across Nunavut.

“These approvals represent important steps in advancing Inuit priorities in language, education, health and wellness,” said Gloria Uluqsi, President of NTI. “By investing in Inuit-led initiatives and building capacity within our communities, we can continue working toward a stronger future for Inuit across Nunavut.”

NTI will continue working with Inuit organizations, governments, communities and partners to advance these priorities and support the implementation of the approved plans.
