NTI to Hold By-election for President Position

Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. Chief Returning Officer Lori Idlout announced that a by-election for the position of president will be held Dec. 13, 2010, the same day the organization is hosting an election for two vice-presidents.

A by-election is necessary following the removal of Paul Kaludjak from the role of president. Members attending the annual general meeting in Rankin Inlet voted to remove Kaludjak from the role of president yesterday. He was serving a suspension for credit card misuse at the time of his removal.

Voters and eligible candidates must be Canadian citizens, at least 16 years of age, and be enrolled under the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement.

The nomination period for the by-election and election is Nov. 1-5, 2010. Nomination forms can be obtained from the Chief Returning Officer, Community Liaison Officers, or from NTI’s website. Eligible candidates must file their nomination papers with the Chief Returning Officer no later than 5 p.m. local time Nov. 5.

Candidates are responsible for ensuring that nomination papers sent to the Chief Returning Officer are received. If nomination papers are not received by deadline, a potential candidate will not be permitted to run in the NTI elections.

Potential candidates may withdraw their nomination papers until 5 p.m. local time on Nov. 8, 2010.
