NTI AGM concludes in Rankin Inlet

(October 20, 2022, Rankin Inlet, Nunavut) Nunavut Tunngavik Inc.’s (NTI) Membership concluded their Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Rankin Inlet, Nunavut today after three days of discussing a wide range of issues important to Nunavut Inuit. NTI’s Chief Financial Officer also reported to the AGM that the organization’s finances have significantly improved, including a clean audit report for 2021-2022. The external auditor observed a marked improvement in internal control and financial processes. For three of the past four years, NTI realized funding surpluses from funding received from the Nunavut Trust in contrast to the large funding deficits experienced in past years. Funding from the Government of Canada has also enabled NTI and Regional Inuit Associations (RIAs) to provide important services to Inuit. Despite operational challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, NTI was able to successfully roll out programs that are vital for Inuit wellbeing such as COVID-19 mitigation programs, addictions and trauma treatment, post-secondary education programs, suicide prevention, TB elimination and other health programs. In the coming year, NTI will continue to work with RIAs and other partners to implement these programs, roll out infrastructure programs and the Inuit health survey. Several resolutions were also passed by the AGM Membership:

• A call to the governments of Canada and Nunavut to increase their efforts to strengthen Inuktut.
• A call to the Government of Canada to continue efforts to have Joannes Revoire extradited to Canada to face justice, and for the government to conduct an inquiry on the history and role of sexual violence by religious institutions in the colonization of Nunavut Inuit, among other things.
• NTI participate in the distinctions-based co-development process of the Indigenous Health Legislation with the goal of transforming health care that works for Inuit.
• An objection to the Government of Nunavut’s Bill 55 – An Act to Amend the Property Assessment and Taxation Act (PATA), which transfers property tax liabilities from mining companies to Inuit.
• A call to governments of Canada and Nunavut to work with Inuit organizations to better understand the scope and impact of poverty on Nunavut Inuit and ensure a strong framework to reduce poverty.
• A call to all federal, provincial and territorial governments to fully implement the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Call to Action No. 63, to increase the teaching of Indigenous history and culture as well as the history and legacy of residential schools, in all grades and in all jurisdictions in Canada.

The Members also heard from special guests including Member of Parliament for Nunavut, Lori Idlout and Premier of Nunavut P.J. Akeeagok. The AGM was also an opportunity to thank James Eetoolook, Vice-President of NTI, for his many years of dedication to the service of Inuit. Mr. Eetoolook will be retiring from politics in December of 2022. The next AGM of the NTI will be held in Cambridge Bay, October 24-26, 2023.
