Nunavut Harvesters Support Program (NHSP) is intended to relieve poverty among Inuit in Nunavut and to preserve and advance Inuit harvesting culture, heritage and traditional ways of life by providing Inuit in need with funding assistance for harvesting activities.

Harvesting Equipment Program

The Harvesting Equipment Program provides Inuit in Nunavut in need with funding assistance to make harvesting equipment and tools more affordable, so that they can participate in traditional harvesting activities. Funding will be provided in three areas:

  • Funding assistance for the purchase of small harvesting equipment;
  • Funding assistance for the purchase of safety equipment; and
  • Funding assistance for disaster relief.

Am I Eligible for Funding?

To be eligible for funding assistance an incorporated entity must:

  • Be in good legal standing to operate in Nunavut;
  • Provide a letter of commitment indicating the organization supports the proposed hunt and agree to distribute at least 50% of the catch to the community;
  • Be able to obtain a harvesting permit, tag or appropriate allocation, if required, for the proposed species to be harvested.

To be eligible for funding assistance an unincorporated group must:

  • Be made up of at least five (5) individuals who are:
    • 16 years of age or older;
    • Enrolled under the Nunavut Agreement, and
    • Participants in the proposed hunt
  • Provide a letter of commitment signed by all organizers indicating that the applicants understand that all or a substantial portion of the harvest (at least 50%) from the proposed hunt will be distributed to the community;
  • Be able to obtain a harvesting permit, tag or appropriate allocation, if required, for the proposed species to be harvested.

Eligible Expenses

The Harvesting Equipment Program provides funding assistance for equipment required to carry out hunting, fishing, gathering and/or trapping activities. This includes the following: a. Small Equipment: 50% of the equipment costs (including shipping costs) to a maximum of $500 per request and $1,000 per family each year for small harvesting equipment/tools (See list of eligible small equipment listed in the application form); b. Safety Equipment: 50% of the equipment costs (including shipping costs) to a maximum of $500 per request and $1,000 per family each year for safety equipment used for harvesting (See list of eligible safety equipment listed in the application form); c. Disaster Relief: 25% of the net replacement cost, to a maximum of $2,000, for any major harvesting equipment lost in an accident or disaster. To qualify for this program, the equipment must be lost or damaged beyond repair. Net replacement cost refers to the purchase price (including shipping costs) of replacement equipment minus any payment from insurance and/or any other government programs on the same equipment.

How do I apply?

If you are interested in applying for funding under the Community Hunt Program, application guidelines and forms are available online at www.tunngavik.com or by contacting the NHSP office. If you require support completing the application form, please contact the NHSP office for assistance. NHSP may work with your Community Liaison Officer (CLO) and/or local Hunter and Trappers Organization (HTO) to determine whether or not your application for funding will be approved, and will notify you of the decision within thirty (30) days after all the information on your application is reviewed.

Eligible Expenses

The Community Hunt Program will provide funding for the following expenses to a maximum of $5,000 per application: a. Fuel for skidoos, ATVs or boats used by the group for the community hunt at the following rates:

  • Skidoo, $50 per day to a maximum amount of $250 per skidoo per application/trip
  • ATV, $30 per day to a maximum amount of $60 per ATV per application/trip
  • Boat, $100 per day for a maximum amount of $500 per boat per application/trip

b. Food for harvesters involved in the community hunt at a rate of $30 per harvester per day to a maximum amount of $150 per harvester per application/trip. Note that NHSP funding cannot be used to pay harvesters for their time during a community hunt.
